Different types of Sugars

Sugar is not just "White sugar" that most people know and use for their cereal, tea and coffee. That's just "sucrose" and too much white sugar is not very good for you or your teeth. It can cause cavities in your teeth.

Sugar provides no vitamins and minerals but has has calories.

Sugar is a simple carbohydrate.

Carbohydrates are the human body's key source of energy.

Glucose is a primary source of energy for the brain.

There are many types of sugars:

Lactose Milk
Fructose Fruit, Honey
Glucose Honey
Maltose
Dextrose

Sugars provide the "sweet flavour" to foods.
Sugars may also act as a preservative and flavour enhancer.

Some sugars are simple sugars (monosaccharides).

Monosaccharides include glucose, fructose and galactose, are made of one sugar molecule,

Others are disaccharides.

Disaccharides are made of two sugar molecules linked together. Disaccharides are formed when monosaccharides combine - for example, when glucose and fructose are combined, they form sucrose, also known as table sugar. Other disaccharides include maltose, dextrose and lactose.

When many sugar molecules are linked together, they form a complex carbohydrate, also known as a starch.
