Geography in action: Cyclones

At the moment there is a cyclone off the coast of Queensland, Australia.

Its called Cyclone Yasi - that means it is the 25th cyclone of the season, as cyclones are named alphabetically.  In bad seasons the names of cyclones can start again from A-Z if there are very many in the season.

Its the same of Tornado's, Hurricanes etc.

A cyclone is a spinning weather system that brings a lot of rain and high winds with it.  It forms over the ocean and moves towards the land causing damage such as uprooted trees, broken windows and damaged roofs.

Here is a link to the news reports on the cyclone is Queensland:  Its interesting to see the live coverage of the cyclone and the charts - you can see the cyclone moving in a spinning way, with the satellite image which reworks on temperature.
