English: Poetry

I have this cool book for poetry called: Developing Poetry Skills: reading Poetry 121-14 by Geoff Barton.

The poem I did today was Womans Work by Maya Angelou.

I found a copy of it on www.poemhunter.com/poem/woman-work/

It goes like this:

Woman Work

I've got the children to tend
The clothes to mend
The floor to mop
The food to shop
Then the chicken to fry
The baby to dry
I got company to feed
The garden to weed
I've got shirts to press
The tots to dress
The can to be cut
I gotta clean up this hut
Then see about the sick
And the cotton to pick.

Shine on me, sunshine
Rain on me, rain
Fall softly, dewdrops
And cool my brow again.

Storm, blow me from here
With your fiercest wind
Let me float across the sky
'Til I can rest again.

Fall gently, snowflakes
Cover me with white
Cold icy kisses and
Let me rest tonight.

Sun, rain, curving sky
Mountain, oceans, leaf and stone
Star shine, moon glow
You're all that I can call my own.

There were some questions to go through based on rhythm and rhyme, narrative, and concrete and abstract nouns.

I enjoyed this poem as its easy to identify with and I know how busy my mum and I are each day cleaning up after the rest of the family.

I also wrote a similar poem which goes like this:

Busy days

I have go clothes to fold
stories to be told
I have got dishes to wash
then oh my gosh
i have got horses to feed
then dogs to lead
the garden to tend
my clothes to mend
The carpet to hover
a plot to maneuver
the food to cook
then look at a book
I have got to do a kind deed
and have a necklace to bead
Friends to catch up with
and wishes to wish....

Help me Fire wind, earth and water
All the powers of this world
for I am your daughter.
